Charlemagne: A successful European monarch
Charles the Great 742-814 AD
-Emperor Charlemagne ruled the Frankish empire from 761-814 AD and under his rule Europe experienced a period of unification.
He built an empire reaching across France and Germany.
In 800 Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Leo III.
Charles I spent 46 years of his rule fighting Muslims in Spain, the Lombards in Italy, the Saxons in the north and the Avars and Slavs in the east.
He was able to extend the Frankish Empire and reunited much of the old Roman Empire, by his powerful conquering skills and extreme love of battle.

Holy Roman Emperor
Charlemagne as Holy Roman Emperor
-In 800, Pope Leo III called on Charlemagne for help against rebellious nobles in Rome.
On Christmas Day, Charlemagne defeated the nobles in Rome.
To show intense appreciation and gratitude, Pope Leo crowned Charlemagne Holy Roman Emperor.
The crowning of a Germanic King as Holy Roman Emperor and the successor of the Roman Empire had enormous significance.
This outrageous decision from the Pope provoked the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire in Constantinople who believed that he and only he was the sole Roman Emperor.
This help widen the split between the East and Western European nations.
It also created unnecessary power struggles between future Germanic kings and popes.

The Great Government
-Charlemagne worked closely with the church to spread Christianity and hoped to create a united Christian Empire.
He appointed powerful nobles to rule local regions and gave them land so they could support him and supply him with soldiers.
He sent officials to check on roads, listen to grievances and complaints and see justice is done.

The exhilaration of Learning:
-Charles I was determined to revive Latin throughout his Empire and aimed to make Aachen, Germany his capital.
He also saw the crucial need of having accurate and complete records, therefore he appointed officials to write down clear records.
During this time Education has declined that even the church leaders and nobles were unenlightened.
To solve this terrible problem, Charlemagne set a palace school at Aachen and set the superior scholar Alcuin of York to run the palace school.
Alucin's curriculum mainly focused on the Latin learning. It also included rhetoric, grammar, Arithmetic, Logic, science, music, geometry, history and astronomy.

Personal Opinion:
-Charlemagne was a superior successful ruler because he greatly helped the Frankish Empire. Here are some of his best achievements that I think improved the way previous rulers led the Empire:
1. Extended the Frankish Empire
2. Built a huge empire stretching across Germany and France.
3. Reunited much of the Roman Empire.
4. Constantly worked wit the church to help spread the Holy religion of Christianity.
5. Appointed dynamic nobles to rule local regions.
6. Tried to always listen to the people's complaints, grievances and suggestions.
7. Made sure justice was done throughout his mighty Empire.
8. Sent officials to check on roads.
9. Determined t revive Latin in his Empire.
10. Had clear, complete and accurate records.
11. Set a learning curriculum and promoted learning.
12. Extended Christian civilisation into Northern Europe.
13. Helped to the further blend of German, Roman and Christian traditions.
14. Set a strong, efficient government.
15. Later Medieval rulers looked up to his Empire to try and centralise their own.
16. Left a great lasting legacy.
